Increasing the download speed of a page, coupled with the provision of detailed information which actually slows down the purchasing process but helps the shopper bond with a product, could increase online fashion sales by more than £134m a year, according to research by retail operations specialists Envision Retail.

The research agrees with other studies that 75% of visitors will leave a site if the page download time is too long. Once they arrive at an individual product page however they will stay for longer if there is more visual stimulus – such as product images.

“While shoppers’ brains screen out 99% of the visual stimuli they are presented with on the high street, it is only 45% when they shop online,” said Jason Kemp, Managing Director, Envision Retail.

Envision also conducted research into the behaviour patterns of shoppers on the high street and the same ‘shopper types’ have been identified in the two environments. Brand Loyal Surfers who stay connected 4.5 times longer than other groups spend an average of 17 minutes on a site. These shoppers look at 7 times more product (an average 170 items), and check out an average of six detailed descriptions.
