Google and Microsoft continued to head up the rankings of most visited sites online in December, according to comScore Europe, with the Home Retail Group (Argos) coming in at number 10 (gaining 14% to 9.9 million visitors).
“Online retailers benefited from increased browsing and buying as consumers went online to do more of their holiday shopping than ever before,” said Bob Ivins, Managing Director of comScore Europe. Retailers like Dixons and Argos showed the strongest gains among the top UK sites online (compared to November’s figures) - retailers accounted for more than half of the list.
The top 3 gainers were shopping sites, led by Dell with 3.9 million visitors (a 52% gain due largely to traffic to Entertainthenation.com), Game.co.uk with 2.2 million visitors (a 35% increase), and Dixons Stores Group with 7.3 million visitors (34% increase), reappearing on the list of top gainers for the second month in a row and ranking at number 16 in the most-visited site list.
Shopping sites that appeared on the list for three consecutive months include HMV with 4 million visitors (a 23% increase), Play.com sites with 5.6 million visitors (20% increase), and Asda with 3.3 million visitors (up 14%).
Apple Computer was the 12th most visited site overall, gaining 17% to 9.4 million visitors, while traffic to the Royal Mail Group, which was responsible for delivering many of the Christmas gifts bought online, was up 16% to 3.7 million visitors.
