What makes a great Checkout?

A recent article by James Maguire for the E-commerce Guide makes some really good suggestions on how a Checkout process should be designed for an online store. Maguire cites Jakob Niielsen, a leading Web usability guru, in his article and notes that a good Checkout should:
Allow the customer to “review the entire order before being asked to provide credit card information.”
“Offer links to get more details about any items in the cart” – EROL’s Checkout allows customers to click on the item in the Checkout, taking the customer back to the product information.
“Enable shoppers top easily change quantities – and remove items”
“Have a ‘Return to Shopping’ link”
And discussing the technique of forcing customers to register before they can buy: “We know users hate that, and we know it’s very error prone. Requiring registration before or during purchase drives away business”
Happily, EROL’s Checkout Page has always done all of the above, which is just more reason that EROL is one of the most liked and used e-commerce software packages for store-owners and professionals alike.
